Your Repository Experts Since 2007

Founded in 2007, Notch8 has spent more than 17 years empowering institutions to preserve and share knowledge through exceptional software craftsmanship.

Our mission is to facilitate the organization, preservation, and accessibility of information and knowledge to individuals and communities, creating sustainable digital solutions that stand the test of time.

What makes clients choose us over other options and stick with us for years? We deliver repositories that work.

These are values we live by every day.  Our clients either hear them outright, or feel it in our quality of service and work:

Communication is Key

We eliminate the frustration of technical black boxes. Our clients always know what's happening, why it matters, and what comes next. Regular check-ins with the right stakeholders, clear documentation, and responsive support mean you're never left wondering about your project's status.

Craftsmanship Pays Off

Short-term shortcuts lead to long-term headaches. We build all of our applications with sustainable, scalable technologies designed to grow with your needs. Our clients spend their budget on new features and improvements—not on fixing poorly built foundations.

Quality Is Your Right

"Good enough" isn't in our vocabulary. We use test-driven development and rigorous internal QA to ensure everything we deliver works as promised. Our definition of "done" is your acceptance—not just code completion.

Happy Teams Build Great Software

Long-lived teams are a cornerstone to delivering high-quality software quickly.  Our low turnover means your project doesn't suffer from constant knowledge handoffs. Happy engineers build great software, and great software makes happy clients. We do everything we can so that the developer who builds your system will still be here to support it years later.

Our Approach Makes the Difference

Our Expertise

Ruby on Rails, JavaScript,

React, DevSecOps

Notch8 works predominantly in Ruby on Rails and JavaScript frameworks and React Native mobile applications, with expertise in several other languages. As active members of the Samvera open-source community since 2016, we bring deep experience in building and maintaining digital repositories that serve academic and cultural institutions.

As Samvera Partners, we've contributed to more than 25 projects in the digital repository space, serving millions of objects and hundreds of terabytes of scholarly content. Our distributed team works across three U.S. time zones, bringing together specialized knowledge while maintaining the responsive service of a boutique firm.

Our Journey

From Notch8 to SoftServ and Back Again

Founded in 2007 by Rob Kaufman, Notch8 built its reputation as a trusted digital repository expert over its first 15 years. In 2022, our success caught the attention of Scientist.com, who acquired Notch8 to expand their scientific services portfolio. For the next two years, we operated as "Software Services by Scientist.com" (SoftServ), maintaining our team and continuing to serve our repository clients.

As 2024 drew to a close, we recognized an opportunity to return to our roots. On January 1, 2025, our entire team reunited under the Notch8 banner, bringing with us all the expertise and experience gained during our time with Scientist.com. This transition has allowed us to refocus entirely on what we do best: creating exceptional digital repositories for academic and cultural institutions.

Throughout these changes, our core commitment has never wavered—the same passionate team, the same dedication to quality, and the same mission of making digital collections accessible and sustainable for generations to come.
